In our last post, we talked about how to come alongside loved ones struggling with addiction. Now, we are going to look at the pivotal role that faith plays in the fight against addiction. At its core, addiction often stems from a misplaced search for fulfillment. When we take our eyes off Christ and seek satisfaction in other things – substances, behaviors, or relationships – we fall into the trap of addiction. Only God can provide the deep, lasting contentment our souls crave.
The path to lasting freedom from addiction is paved with the transformative power of the Gospel. It’s not merely about behavior modification or willpower; it’s about a fundamental change in our hearts and minds through the work of the Holy Spirit. This transformation begins as we begin grasp the depth of God’s love for us in Christ and allow that truth to permeate every aspect of our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Central to this transformation is the concept of having a “new heart.” From the moment we believe the Gospel, we are promised that God will give us a new heart and put a new spirit within us (Ezekiel 36:26). This new heart, softened and responsive to God’s will, is the foundation for real, lasting change in the life of someone struggling with addiction.
It’s crucial for those in recovery to understand that real change is possible, and to understand that embracing and fighting for change is a critical part of the recovery process. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in believers (Ephesians 1:19-20, 2:1-7). This truth offers hope and encouragement, especially during the difficult moments of the recovery journey.
However, it’s equally important to recognize that this change usually happens slowly and over time. Just as a seed takes time to grow and bear fruit, recovery is often a gradual process. This understanding can help prevent discouragement and foster patience and perseverance.
Faith in Christ provides the strength, hope, and perspective needed to overcome addiction. It reminds us of our true identity in Christ, offers forgiveness and grace when we stumble, and provides a community of believers to support and encourage us. As we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, trusting in His power and promises, we can find the strength to resist temptation and the hope to persevere in our journey towards healing and wholeness.

Chew On This: Often, it helps us to persevere when we remember God’s faithfulness in the past. The Psalms are full of examples of recounting God’s past acts to remind ourselves of his certain, future faithfulness. What is one way that God has changed your heart and given you victory over sin in the past?
