Okay, this may sound overly simplistic at first, but hear me out. The first commandment is that we are to love God with all we have and are. But when we sin, there is always the same one-two punch that Satan delivered to Adam and Eve:
-
First, he gets us to believe that we can judge the word of God or even God Himself.
-
Second, once we are in a position of judging God, Satan encourages us to believe that God is not good, that He doesn’t love us.
Then we naturally choose something that is sinful to God, often something that is itself good (acceptance, security, etc) but that we pursue apart from God.
So how do we combat these temptations and love God with all we have and are?
We have to functionally convince ourselves God loves us with all He has and is. Then our love for Him grows to the point where we see all we have and are at His disposal. When we experience God’s complete love, we would be willing to pay any price because we’ve already got what is the most precious thing we could possibly have: Him.
Easier said than done.
So how do we convince ourselves of God’s love, and how do we stay there? Can we stay there? Won’t we sin for the rest of our lives?
Of course, we are going to sin. Romans 7 makes that clear, as does 1 John. But the more we are convinced that He loves us with all He has and is, the more we are going to become like Him.
This is going to be a process. But it is my hope that as the next series of blogs come out, you and I both will see a lifelong path that will ultimately lead to us overcoming pet sins, pursuing our calls with a vengeance, and enjoying the incredible, delicious fruits of the Spirit that will impact those around us.
