A Story of Ambition and Waiting
A client, Marcus, had always been a go-getter—never content to stand still, always scanning the horizon for “what’s next.” Promotions came quickly, responsibilities multiplied, and with each new season he grew more restless—even successful transitions felt like pit stops. Whenever his forward momentum slowed or doors didn’t open instantly, Marcus struggled with frustration and quiet envy of leaders advancing faster. The ache wasn’t for more money or recognition, but for significance, legacy—a sense that he was being used by God for impact now. Yet, in slower seasons, it often felt like God was doing nothing.
When Growth Feels Like Waiting
Do you ever sense tension between God-given ambition and the call to contentment? Are you driven to make a difference but sometimes annoyed at your current assignment or rate of progress? Maybe you’re excellent at what you do, but your heart is restless, glancing past today’s work while you dream of “greener pastures.” Perhaps you’ve wondered if waiting seasons are wasted seasons, or if faithfulness now really matters for Kingdom impact in the future.
Kingdom Ambition: Rooted, Not Restless
The Gospel calls us to so much more than “just get by”—God deposits desire for growth, influence, and excellence in His people for His glory. Yet, unlike the world’s restless doggedness, Kingdom ambition is content to grow roots before bearing visible fruit. Scripture is full of leaders who waited, sowed faithfully, and saw God multiply their “planted” obedience—Joseph in prison, Esther in obscurity, David in wild fields, Paul in quiet years. Kingdom ambition delights in the assignment God gives now, without striving to manufacture the next.
For Marcus, learning to CHEW on God’s promises in the waiting meant shifting his prayer from “When will the next thing come?” to “What fruit do You want to grow in me here, now?” Little by little, his contentment rose. His work became more excellent, his relationships deepened, and—almost ironically—the doors eventually opened, not by anxious striving but through trustful stewardship right where he was.
A CHEW™ Reset for Seasons of Waiting and Growth
- Breathe: God’s love is active in your present season, not just your next.
- Adore: “Father, thank You for planting me purposefully, for seeing the bigger picture and working even when I can’t see results.”
- Confess: Where have I despised my current assignment or doubted Your timing? Where do I compare or strive instead of trust?
- Hear:
- “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish.” (Psalm 92:13)
- “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
- “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” (Philippians 1:6)
- Exchange: If I really believed God’s love is wise, purposeful, and able to bear lasting fruit right where I am, how would that change my drive to “move on,” my longing for recognition, or my attitude toward this season?
- Walk: What is one way I can practice rooted faithfulness today—by investing deeply, encouraging someone here, or celebrating small victories in this place?
- Thanksgiving Worship: Thank You, Lord, for seeing beyond my impatience—for growing me in hidden ways, and for using planted seasons for true significance.
CHEW On This™
Set a reminder during your next routine task—whether in your commute, at your desk, or while at home—and revisit the Exchange question above:
If I really believed God’s love is wise, purposeful, and able to bear lasting fruit right where I am, how would that change my drive to “move on,” my longing for recognition, or my attitude toward this season?
Let trust become the soil in which new contentment and Kingdom ambition flourish.
True Growth Is Never Wasted
The world’s ambition rushes ahead; Kingdom ambition trusts God’s timing and celebrates excellence in today’s post—not just tomorrow’s dream. Growing where you’re planted is neither stagnation nor smallness, but the way God brings hidden strength and unexpected impact.
