Why It’s Hard to Go Alone
You ever try to change your life in isolation? Growing up, I learned fast—real growth almost always happens with other people watching, encouraging, or challenging you. From the park in Washington Heights to boardrooms in Atlanta, culture eats strategy every time. That’s true in our spiritual life, too: you’re far more likely to experience heart-deep transformation when it’s shared, seen, and celebrated.
Maybe You’ve Tried, But Drifted…
Maybe you started journaling your core drivers, or tried the CHEW process after a tough week—only to fall off when life sped up, or nobody asked you how it went. You’re not weak. You’re normal. God designed heart change to take root most deeply in spiritual family, not solo heroics.
Building a Return Culture: Practical Moves
1. Start Simple Rituals (Daily/Weekly Return)
- Pick your rhythm—one CHEW a day, a Friday “return moment” in the family, or a weekly team gratitude round.
- Don’t aim for perfect or “deep” every time. Just keep the habit alive.
2. Share Honestly, Celebrate Small Wins
- Add a “return wall” (digital or on the fridge/office whiteboard). Each time someone names a gap and practices CHEW, note it—no matter the outcome.
- Host a monthly or quarterly “Return Celebration”—share stories of Gospel comeback moments and thank God together.
3. Rotate Leadership and Storytelling
- Let each group member or family member take turns leading the CHEW, sharing their “driver moment,” or picking the Scripture for the week.
- Emphasize progress over polish; honor courage, not dramatic breakthroughs.
4. Anchor Rituals to Gospel Means
- Open and close with prayer, a favorite Gospel promise, or (if you’re able) the Lord’s Supper.
- Let “return moments” bring you back not just to self-reflection, but to Christ’s visible love.
Everyday Example
- Family Night: Everyone shares one thing that pressed a core driver this week; the group picks a Gospel truth, then prays gratitude for one another’s honest return.
- Team Meeting: Open with, “Where did you feel a gap between what you believe and what you lived last week?” Then, do a CHEW together for one scenario.
Remember This
Culture is what you do again and again. If you mark, share, and celebrate the journey of returning to God’s love—especially at the “gap” moments—you’ll build the kind of spiritual ecosystem where hearts don’t just change, they stay soft, hopeful, and growing for the long haul.
CHEW On This™
“What’s one small ritual, practice, or celebration you (and your group/family/team) could add this week to make Gospel return a normal, joy-filled part of everyday life?”
Bring it into the open. Let community become your “heartbeat of return.”
