The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals
Julia closes her journal and sighs. Another CHEW session, another sobering Exchange. She imagines what her life would look like if she truly believed God loves her as much as He loves Jesus: less fear, more courage, quiet joy instead of simmering anxiety, real apologies instead of defensiveness. Yet her reality—resentments, slip-ups, old habits—seems so far from that picture, it almost feels like despair.
“What’s wrong with me?” she wonders. “Shouldn’t I be more changed by now? Why does this gap feel bigger every time I’m honest in prayer?”
When CHEW brings clarity but not comfort, hope can feel more distant—not less.
Gospel Insight: God’s Love Meets You in the Gap—Your Discouragement is the Place of His Kindness, Not His Rejection
The ache of seeing the difference between your “if I really believed it” life and your here-and-now reality is not a signal that you’re failing or falling behind. God delights to meet you precisely in that space between longing and living—where you don’t yet reflect the love you want to trust.
Surprise: When you feel the gap, you are nearest to grace—not farthest from it. In fact, the clearest evidence that the Spirit is working is not perfection but holy desire and honest regret (Romans 8:23-26). God brings this ache to lead you toward healing, not shame, and His patience does not grow thin as you become aware of how much farther there is to go.
The “should” is not a condemnation; it’s an invitation from the One who loves you now and every step forward.
Let’s CHEW on this with fresh courage.
CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes
Confess (C):
Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling: “I see all the ways my life could look, and I feel discouraged, small, far from where I know I ‘should’ be. The gap makes me want to hide or give up.”
Hear (H):
Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with?
“…the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26, ESV)
God does not shame you for the gap—He comes closer. His kindness meets you right where you are.
Exchange (E):
If I really believed God’s love is patient, gentle, always interceding for my weakness, how would that change the discouragement and shame I feel when I see what’s not yet true of me?
Today, I give You my self-judgment and perfectionism, and I receive Your smile over my honest longing, not my performance.
Walk (W):
Holy Spirit, guide me to the next step that pleases You.
Today, I’ll write one line of kindness to myself for every “should”—reminding myself that every gap is an open invitation to receive more love, not to work harder alone.
How to CHEW When the Gap Brings Discouragement
1. Remember—Awareness is a Gift, Not a Failure
Seeing the gap between “what could be” and “what is” means God is awakening holy desire. Don’t run from it—name it, grieve it, and let it draw you closer, not away.
2. Replace the “Should” with “Invitation”
Every “I should be further by now” is re-written by Jesus as “I am moving you forward, one honest step at a time.”
Why it works: It changes shame into hope and urgency into patience.
3. Celebrate the “Longing” as Real Faith
Longing for change is not weakness—it’s a sign your heart is alive to God. The alternative is numbness or resignation.
4. Shift from Self-Improvement to Self-Compassion in God’s Love
Instead of berating yourself, try: “God, I see this gap. Thank You for not giving up on me. Here’s one thing I can try today, with Your help.”
5. Use the Exchange for Hope, Not Condemnation
Let the image of “if I really believed God loves me as much as Jesus” serve as a north star, not a measuring stick. It points the way forward; it does not demand immediate arrival.
6. Ask God to Show You Micro-Wins
Ask: “Father, can You show me where small steps are happening, even when I don’t feel it?” Often, growth is slow and subtle.
7. Invite Trusted Community to Speak Truth
Share your discouragement with someone who can remind you of what’s already changed and pray for patience, not perfection.
Worship Invitation
Thank God right now that His love covers the entire distance between where you are and where you long to be. Worship Him for delighting in you at every stage—not just at the finish line. Rest in the truth that His pace for you is wise and gentle.

Ryan
