When the Pull Feels Stronger Than Your Will: A Temptation CHEW for Gospel Power

The Daily CHEW™

CHEW on God’s Love. Live Transformed. Multiply Hope

Yesterday at 2:30 PM, I felt it again—that familiar internal tension that high-performers know all too well. The stress of back-to-back client calls, a challenging team dynamic, and the pressure of an upcoming proposal deadline had created the perfect storm. And there it was: the pull toward something I knew wouldn’t actually help but promised temporary relief. Maybe it was reaching for my phone to mindlessly scroll when I should be focused. Maybe it was the urge to control a conversation in a way that wasn’t truthful. Maybe it was that internal voice saying, “Just this once, just to get through today.”

Maybe you recognize this moment. Maybe temptation shows up for you when you’re exhausted and your defenses are down, or when success has made you feel invincible, or when failure has left you feeling desperate for something—anything—that feels good. Maybe you’ve experienced that frustrating cycle where your willpower works for a while, but then crumbles under pressure, leaving you feeling defeated and questioning your faith.

Here’s what I’ve learned from years of walking with successful people who struggle with hidden battles: temptation isn’t primarily about moral weakness or lack of discipline. It’s about trying to find satisfaction and relief apart from God when our hearts haven’t been anchored in His complete sufficiency and better promises. When we fight temptation with willpower alone, even our best efforts become another form of self-reliant striving. But God’s love offers something fundamentally different—power that flows from His strength, not ours, and promises that are better than anything temptation offers.

Finding God’s Power in the Moment of Pull

Join me for a CHEW right now—designed specifically for those moments when temptation feels overwhelming and your will feels weak.

CHEW in 3-7 Minutes:

  1. Stop and breathe deeply—acknowledging that God’s love for you doesn’t depend on your performance in this moment of temptation. His grace covers you right now.
  2. Adore (1 minute): “Jesus, you resisted temptation perfectly. Thank you for defeating sin, and breaking sin’s power. You are mighty.”
  3. Confess (1-2 minutes): What is this temptation really promising me? What deeper longing or fear is it trying to address—comfort, control, escape, validation, relief from pressure? Where am I looking for satisfaction apart from God?
  4. Hear (2-3 minutes): What truth about God’s love do I most need to combat this specific temptation?
    • “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
    • “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” – Hebrews 4:15
    • “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” – 2 Peter 1:3
    • “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” – Philippians 4:13
  5. Exchange (1-2 minutes): If God’s love truly satisfies me, I would exchange the false promise of this temptation for trust in His better provision. I would exchange my need to find relief my way for confidence in His way of meeting my deeper need. I would exchange my reliance on willpower for dependence on His strength.
  6. Walk (30 seconds – 1 minute): What’s one immediate, practical step I can take right now that flows from God’s power rather than my own effort? Maybe it’s calling a trusted friend. Maybe it’s removing myself from this situation. Maybe it’s choosing a specific Scripture to meditate on. Maybe it’s taking a walk while praying.
  7. Thanksgiving & Worship (30 seconds): Thank God that His love provides better satisfaction than any temptation. Thank Him that His power is available to you right now, in this moment of weakness.

Additional Support for Ongoing Temptation

For persistent struggles: Return to this CHEW multiple times throughout the day. Consider memorizing one of the Scripture verses above so it’s available in moments when you can’t stop to read. Remember that transformation often happens through repeated encounters with truth, not single victories.

For deeper patterns: The goal isn’t perfect resistance, but increasing dependence on God’s power and better promises. Each time you turn to God in temptation—even if you’ve already given in—you’re building neural pathways of grace that make His power more accessible.

Remember This

Gospel power isn’t about never feeling tempted or achieving moral perfection. It’s about turning—again and again—to the love that holds you whether you resist perfectly or fail completely, whether you feel strong or desperately weak. God delights in your dependence on His strength, not your ability to overcome temptation independently.

CHEW On This™:

If I really believed God’s love offers better satisfaction than any temptation and His power is greater than my weakness, how would that change the way I approach moral struggles and the moments when I feel most vulnerable?

The CHEW system works best when practiced in community. Consider sharing your struggles with trusted friends or mentors. Explore what changes when you create consistent rhythms for moving God’s love from head to heart—building spiritual strength before temptation hits, not just seeking help in crisis moments.
