The Daily CHEW™
Chew on God’s Love. Live Transformed. Multiply Hope.
Some mornings, my mind wakes up before my spirit does. Last week, returning from a long client call, my head was buzzing—racing with “what ifs” and mistakes to fix. As a dad and consultant prone to overanalyzing, I downshift into “problem-solver mode” instead of prayer, checking emails before checking in with God. My ENFJ drive can make me resourceful—or restless.
Maybe you know this, too.
Maybe your own seasons of stress or disappointment aren’t simply emotional—they feel almost physical: knotted shoulders, brain fog, sleepless nights, and an endless internal script replaying setbacks or slights. Perhaps, like me, you marvel at how hard it is to “bounce back,” even when you know the right answers.
Lately, I’ve been learning something both humbling and hopeful: resilience isn’t just a character trait or a “mindset.” The science of neuroplasticity—our God-given ability to rewire neural pathways—shows that our brains literally change in response to repeated practices of hope and return, especially when those practices are anchored in real, Gospel-centered belonging.
Gospel-Infused Neuroscience:
When setbacks come, the world says, “Push through, distract, or escape.” The Gospel offers a better story: Return. Repeatedly coming back to God’s love trains not only our hearts but our very brains to rebound from stress. Neurotheology research has found that spiritual rhythms—especially honest lament, worship, and gratitude—activate networks in the brain connected to emotional regulation, hope, and social bonding. Simply put, what we choose to return to (even imperfectly) forms deeper grooves of peace and resilience.
Harvard neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett notes, “Emotional intelligence is less about controlling feelings than learning which emotions to trust and return to.” Scripture said this first: “Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.” (Psalm 116:7)
CHEW Reset Invitation
Will you pause for a 3-minute, Gospel-based “reset” with me? This isn’t spiritual heroics. It’s neural retraining, God’s way.
Join me. Try this now:
CHEW in 3–5 Minutes
- Breathe:
Take three slow breaths. Let each exhale remind you: God’s love is always running toward you, not away from you. - Adore:
“Father, You are present in the swirl of my thoughts—with me, not against me.” - Confess:
What emotion has been “driving the bus” lately—anxiety, anger, defeat, numbness?
Where has your mind most often returned: to regret, worry, or hope? - Hear:
What truth or promise interrupts your default pathway?- “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
- “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
- “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you.” (Isaiah 26:3)
- Exchange:
If I really believed God’s love is relentless and rewiring, how would that reshape how I process stress or disappointment today? Ex: I would exchange self-criticism for gentle curiosity, shame for permission to begin again, pressure for the rest of being shaped by God—not just my own effort. - Walk:
What’s one tiny action—right now or before bed—that moves your brain and soul toward God’s presence?- Journal three gratitudes, however small.
- Play worship music and allow yourself to feel.
- Text a trusted friend, simply saying, “Could you pray for peace for me right now?”
- Thanksgiving & Worship:
“Father, thank You for designing my mind to renew, not to break. Root my identity deeper in Your love—even through setbacks and slow returns.”
Remember This
Resilience isn’t about never faltering; it’s about honest return. Neuroscience and Scripture agree: every loving return to God—however shaky—creates new grooves of peace. Real growth is measured in the patience to begin again, not the absence of emotional storms.
